Gateway to THE GREEN HEART

A visit to the Green

To date, I have written 475 Poetic Limericks, including 35 poems about some aspect of Dartmouth College or the New Hampshire area around the school. In addition, I have written a number of poems about other subjects of interest to many Dartmouth people - - poems about snow, skiing, things green, and Native American culture. My first on-line book entitled THE GREEN HEART contains 40 of these poems of particular interest to the Dartmouth community along with over 20 accompanying photos. Only three or four of my poems related to Dartmouth themes are not included in THE GREEN HEART. These are my most recent works and two of them are presented here in advance of the lead-in to THE GREEN HEART. The first poem is a heartfelt effort to describe the unusual spirit which characterizes Dartmouth undergraduates as well as the alumni (and alumnae).

DARTMOUTH SPIRIT

I speak of the Dartmouth mystique,
Avidness other Ivies critique;
Loving spirit infused,
Alma Mater enthused,
All those feelings so truly unique.

Our experience captured inside,
The affection for place and deep pride;
Magic spell of the mind,
Time and space not confined,
In our hearts strong emotions abide.

On the campus this spirit imbued,
Mad love of things green unsubdued;
Dartmouth Hall ever white,
Baker's light shining bright,
Every visit attachment renewed.

It starts on the first day of school,
Class spirit roots fast as a rule;
So quickly it spreads,
To consume Dartmouth heads,
And green hearts to the last molecule.

Through the years college fervor just grows,
Expansion of green afterglows;
Granite rock in the core,
A close family and more,
As the passion for Dartmouth still flows.

Fond friendships of old are maintained,
Reunions with joy unrestrained;
New ties, new dimension,
Strange zeal in ascension,
School spirit not fully explained.

The second poem is a light-hearted attempt to add a fantasy dimension to the wild and crazy world of the big green.

THE GREEN PIMPERNEL

If a Dartmouth Man's sex has defects,
Sex problem that's gotten complex;
With help truly needed,
Voice crying is heeded,
The Green Pimpernel ne'er neglects.

Just who is this savior you ask?
And why does he take on this task?
His name is unknown,
For he acts all alone,
A green hero that's prone to a mask.

In secret he serves Dartmouth men,
Somehow he just knows where and when;
Without single blunder,
His methods cause wonder,
Vast knowledge beyond human ken.

In matters of sex he's a master,
Masters and Johnson - - he's faster;
From his full bag of tricks,
Comes a permanent fix,
His approach licks the depths of disaster.

Renewal for sex drive that's faded,
Those blockaded revive and are aided;
Using medical pills,
Even magical skills,
New thrills for the jaded persuaded.

For the horny and lovelorn impaired,
The Green Hornet is nothing compared
To the green Pimpernel,
As he casts a love spell,
His swell secrets erotic are shared.
