A couple that are very good friends of myself and my wife live for a good part of the year on the island of St. Thomas in the Caribbean. Several years ago we visited them there and was inspired to write a poem. Thinking about them recently, I reread the poem and decided to present it as this month's Poem of the Month. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do.

ST. THOMAS
Where the banyan tree grows in dense rows,
White houses hug steep mountain flows;
The trade wind blows gentle,
Wild plants ornamental,
Warm sun upon rainbows oft glows.
The view from on high treats the eye,
Seaplanes called "The Goose" flying by;
Water sparkles profuse,
Palm fronds summer puce,
In deep winter it seems like July.
Such excitement the day of big ships,
Queen Mary too large for the slips;
Harbor full, overflowing,
The festive crowds growing,
Highlight of Caribbean trips.
Night falls and bright lights dot the scene,
On the hillsides, the docks, and between;
Glowing ships leaving port,
Perfect stay - - all too short,
Shangri-La of the south, island queen.

SOME WORDS ABOUT NEXT MONTH'S POEM OF THE MONTH
Next month's Poem of the Month entitled "Contemplation of Green" was written back in 2004 for inclusion in an online book of Poetic Limericks entitled "The Green Heart" - - a work of particular interest to the Dartmouth community. I have decided to revisit this light hearted effort and present it as my Poem of the Month for August.
